This is a rework from the same title in 2021 which I made if for Die Erde spricht – 100 Years Joseph Beuys A Podcast. The title “Speeches of the Unheard” is revised from the sentence “But in the final analysis, a riot is the language of the unheard.” “What is it that Americans have failed to hear?” Martin Luther King Jr., 1967, “The Other America” speech at Stanford University. 

The work responds to the political situation in Thailand through a “hybrid regime” or “procedural democracy” where elections occur but are “hollowed out” by selective nullification of outcomes or constraints by elite powers. Our voices, therefore, do not reflect the opinions of the majority. Any opinion or statement is meaningless, like the Thai idiom “the sound of birdsong, the sound of crows,” which means sounds that are meaningless or should not be paid attention to. Our voices today are like the meaningless sounds of birdsong and crows, merely noises they try to silence. But this art installation encourages viewers to continue expressing our opinions in a provocative and playful way.

As viewers speak to the microphone, their voices are spontaneously replaced by bird calls. The bird calls are sourced from over 2,000 sounds of birds in Thailand, spanning all regions of the country: Central, Northern, Southern, Eastern, Western, and Northeastern.

ผลงานชิ้นนี้สะท้อนสถานการณ์ทางการเมืองในประเทศไทยผ่าน “ระบอบลูกผสม” หรือ “ประชาธิปไตยเชิงกระบวนการ” ที่มีการเลือกตั้งเกิดขึ้น แต่ “ถูกทำให้ว่างเปล่า” ด้วยการยกเลิกผลการเลือกตั้งอย่างเลือกปฏิบัติ หรือถูกจำกัดโดยอำนาจของชนชั้นนำ ดังนั้น เสียงของเราจึงไม่ได้สะท้อนความคิดเห็นของคนส่วนใหญ่ ความคิดเห็นหรือคำกล่าวใดๆ จึงไร้ความหมาย เหมือนสำนวนไทยที่ว่า “เสียงนก เสียงกา” ซึ่งหมายถึงเสียงที่ไร้ความหมายหรือไม่ควรให้ความสนใจ เสียงของเราในปัจจุบันเปรียบเสมือนเสียงนกร้องและเสียงกาที่ไร้ความหมาย เป็นเพียงเสียงที่พวกเขาพยายามจะกลบให้เงียบ แต่ผลงานศิลปะชิ้นนี้กระตุ้นให้ผู้ชมแสดงความคิดเห็นต่อไปในรูปแบบที่ท้าทายและสนุกสนาน

เมื่อผู้ชมพูดใส่ไมโครโฟน เสียงของพวกเขาจะถูกแทนที่ด้วยเสียงนกร้องโดยอัตโนมัติ เสียงนกร้องเหล่านี้มาจากเสียงนกกว่า 2,000 เสียงในประเทศไทย ครอบคลุมทุกภูมิภาคของประเทศ ทั้งภาคกลาง ภาคเหนือ ภาคใต้ ภาคตะวันออก ภาคตะวันตก และภาคตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือ
