Synopsis

“Two Sides of the Moon” features the life of fishermen at the beginning and the ending areas of the Moon River, where it joins the Mekong River as a Thai-Laos border.

Each location faced the change of the riverscape by the man-made dam, but their stories and how it impacted their lives are opposite. One community started to learn how to fish, and the other counted names of extinct fish and tools.

The concept of light and darkness derives from the moon’s shines and shades; contrastingly, the two sides reveal the unequal destinies.

Two Sides of the Moon is a two-channel video installation by Som Supaparinya, a Thai artist based in Chiang Mai. The artist is known for creating multiple-screen installations utilising documentary-style moving images. The subject of her work revolves around the relationship between man-made infrastructures and their environmental impact. For the Thailand Biennale, Som filmed the lives of fishermen at the beginning of the Moon River at Thap Lan National Park in Nakhon Ratchasima Province and downstream at Phiboonmangsahan, Sirindhorn and Khong Chiam districts in Ubon Ratchathani Province. Mun, the name of the river, means “heritage” or “a valuable gift from the ancestors” in the local dialect. During the Cold War period, the American troops who were stationed along the river gave her a transliteration, “Moon,” which also introduced a new meaning. The artist portrays the changes of riverscape and people along the shore, as well as visual and sonic elements—both natural and mechanical—that affected their livelihood. Two Sides of the Moon is presenting two sides of the same gift. It urges us to think of the current state of the river and how to save it for the next generation.

Two Sides of the Moon เป็นผลงานจัดวางวีดีโอสองจอโดย ส้ม ศุภปริญญา ศิลปินไทยจากจังหวัดเชียงใหม่ ศิลปินเป็นที่รู้จักจากการสร้างสรรค์ผลงานจัดวางภาพเคลื่อนไหวแบบหลายจอในลักษณะของสารคดี ประเด็นที่ศิลปินสนใจมักจะเกี่ยวกับความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างสาธารณูปโภคที่มนุษย์สร้างและผลกระทบต่อสภาพแวดล้อม ส้มบันทึกชีวิตของชาวประมงจากต้นแม่น้ำมูลจากเขตอุทยานแห่งชาติทับลาน และปลายแม่น้ำจากอำเภอพิบูลมังสาหาร สิรินธร และโขงเจียม คำว่ามูลเป็นภาษาถิ่นที่หมายถึงมรดกหรือของขวัญจากบรรพบุรุษ แต่ทหารชาวอเมริกันที่มาประจำการอยู่ในภาคอีสานตอนใต้ในช่วงสงครามเย็นต่างขนานนามเธอว่า Moon ที่แปลว่าพระจันทร์ ศิลปินแสดงภาพความเปลี่ยนแปลงของสายน้ำ ชีวิตของผู้คน รวมไปถึงเสียงและภาพรอบตัวพวกเขา ทั้งที่มาจากธรรมชาติและเครื่องจักรกล สองเงามูล แสดงให้เห็นทั้งสองด้านของของขวัญ ผลงานเรียกร้องให้เราหวนคิดถึงสถานะปัจจุบันของแม่น้ำ และคำถามว่าเราจะรักษาสมบัติอันนี้ให้กับคนรุ่นหลังอย่างไร
