This film is based on observations of Chiang Mai’s rapid transformation over the past few years. It’s common for any city to undergo constant change, especially in a developing country like ours. Some cities change rapidly, while others barely notice it. However, we often notice these changes when we visit occasionally. However, rapid changes in cities, while still living, often surprise residents. We can’t predict the direction of our surroundings.
Every time I see a city change, I can’t help but think of my grandparents and their feelings. Their memories of different places may not leave any trace, telling the present generation about their impressions or sorrows in different corners of the city, or how they are adapting to a rapidly evolving world.
The film is a narrative of Chiang Mai through the personal stories of five elderly people, all over 70 at the time. They recount the turning points of Chiang Mai’s community at different times in their lives, the city’s transitions throughout each era, and the impact they have on the lives of its residents. Their experiences influence how they now choose to act on the city and its community, and motivate the younger generations in their families and communities to move in certain directions.
The film examines the dynamics, primarily the structure of the city. From the stories, we see that the prosperity of businesses and transportation has a profound effect on whether different areas of the city will prosper or decline. Prosperity and decline jump from one street to another rapidly. Survival, adapting to changing circumstances, and anticipating strategies to cope with change have lasting effects on people, not just in the past. The unpredictable expansion and relocation of urban development to the present day requires our generation to be aware of this and prepare for it.
The decisions of influential political figures, the shifts in government policy, politics, governance, and economics all have long-term effects on people’s lives, the cities, and the environments in which we live, both tangible and intangible. How can we deny that politics is not our business?
The film was shot before the September 19, 2006 coup and was edited in December of the same year.
Most of the interviewees are now passed away.
