1997, Site and time-specific performing at a former Railway Hotel, Chiang Mai, Thailand

Deserted & Embraced, a group exhibition by Suthee Eur-Siripornrit, Kosit Juntaratip, Patipan Nagwiroj, Araya Rasdjarmrearnsook, Navin Lawanchaikul, Yuvanuj Vongsayan, and Rirkrit Tiravanija.

Curated by Dr. Helen Michaelsen

“Weaving together the conceptual structure and the narrative of her work, “Sound in One Minute- One Instrument- One Person- One room” emphasized the intensity of the moment. Stressing the fleeting character of deserted & embraced- that like sounds, nothing can be held on to and nothing can be possessed- invited musicians performed music at one of the sixty hotel rooms just for one minute, the location for their performances being predetermined by the prior chosen time. Most of the time the musicians were invisible with only the sound being “visible”, however, the sound not really revealing its source of origin.”

“Suthirat Supaparinya used the sound of music that grew here and there and then faded away. It tells of the existence of a transient, unsustainable, ever-changing to the point of being intangible.

Dozens of musicians were invited to this event. Each carried their own musical instruments into the hotel’s ruined rooms. The melody is played in a room with number corresponding to the minute time, i.e. at 10.05, the music will be played in room no. 5 on the first floor, at 11.30 the music will be played on the 3rd floor, room 30. The music will be played only one minute in each room.

The audience may follow and wait, but for the most part they will only hear the noise here and there, and the sound is like time. Like many conditions that do not persist, but move and change, cannot be held in any way.”
