Synopsis

This work explores nuclear power as a means of electricity generation in Tokyo, and its strange status as deadly yet functionally practical.
I captured the top 10 places in Tokyo that used the most electricity in 2010. Electricity consumption in Tokyo is linked closely to TEPCO, the company that faced a crisis after the Tsunami hit its nuclear power plant in 2011.

My methods use images of the effects of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima in black and white moving images. These effects are of a bright and heated blast that burned away dark or black-colored parts of objects during August 1945.

This case study shows a pair of historical events that were triggered by the same technology and ‘repeat’ the disaster. I think we should be aware that nuclear power can turn to be a weapon. We should be more concerned with the risks of generating electricity and the reduction of electricity consumption either by changing our behavior or redesigning devices.

Work description

My Grandpa”s Route Has Been Forever Blocked

This work was started when I was an artist in residence at the Tokyo Wonder Site- Aoyama, Japan in 2012.

I undertook a full month of research on the relationship between the usage of electricity and how we produce it. I looked at data of the Top Ten places in Tokyo that use the most electricity, which a staff member from TWS found in the Tokyo Shinbun Newspaper. (This data using the emission of CO2 as an indicator of electricity consumption. Emissions from electricity and heat generation have been allocated to the final consuming sectors in proportion to the electricity and heat consumed. Read more about the relation of emission of CO2 and electricity consumption here and here)

B&W images intentionally use in this work and it was from my research at The Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, Japan. There I saw mostly evidence of the atomic bomb with black and white colors such as kimonos, black ink texts on white papers, and images of burned shadow. Heat rays of approximately 5,000°-Celsius produced by the atomic blast burned away dark or black colored parts of objects because they absorbed more heat. This effect shocked me and inspired me to research more information on nuclear history. In my work, I use the effect of the atomic bomb by burned-out/destroy the darkest part of the images first and continue to destroy the dark color of the images until the whole loose quality of the black, gray, and white. The bright white across the ten screens at once also depicts the bright flash of the atomic bomb on the sky when it explored.

In Ten Places in Tokyo, I visualized a relation of the heat ray effects that happened in Hiroshima in 1945 and Tokyo’s top ten electricity-consuming places in 2010. Why I use images of Tokyo and not Fukushima? TEPCO’s nuclear power plant in Fukushima produced electricity mainly for Tokyo.

Ten Places in Tokyo is derived from a historical nuclear as a weapon in 1945 and the latest disaster as an electricity generation in Japan. This pair can be a case study to reflect on a global energy issue. The more we spend energy (electricity), the more we repeat our danger. We cannot live without it, but we can save it through good design. Safe energy produce is preferred.

There are 3 kinds of work under the same title:

1. 2013, Burn B&W photographs, 10 images each size 20×26 inch.
2. 2016, synchronized 10-channel video, black and white, sound, HD, 6 minutes. This edition made for a 10-channel video installation which exhibited the first time in 2016.
3. 2013, Single-channel video, black and white, sound, HD, 6 minutes
